The Importance of Good Project Management for IT Projects

Have you had IT projects run behind schedule and over budget? While working as a CFO, I found that to be a common problem. So, I looked into why that happened.

Here is what I found:  IT professionals are generally task oriented. Plus, very few have been trained in good project management. That combination creates a disconnect between the work that needs to be done and the timeline for the project.

For example, most technicians will tell you it takes about 4 hours to set up a new server. And that is how long the actual task takes, once you have everything ready to go. However, there are often problems with equipment and delays in dealing with 3rd parties, such as internet providers. So, it is more likely to take a whole day of actual time to get the server up and running.

Unless your IT team has demonstrated strong project management skills, you can benefit from working with them to develop a good project plan with estimated time and resources required.

Good project management adds a lot of value. When someone takes the time to think about what resources are needed when and allows time for vendor management, projects get done on time and within budget.
