While doing some networking this month, I was surprised to talk to several companies that did not really have anyone in charge of their networks. While networks can work reliably for quite a while after an initial setup, it is not a good idea to leave it to chance. There are three things you want managed on your network:
Ongoing Security
Long gone are the days when you could just set up a network and assume that it would be safe. Hacking is far too common and hackers search for networks with little or no protection. To protect your network, you need to regularly update your anti-virus software and other software to protect against known security issues. In addition, you want a firewall that protects your network while also permitting your people the access they need.
Appropriate Access
If a network is not managed properly, a tech savvy employee can often get access to sensitive information, such as other employee's salaries or company financials. (Some companies even put a young, tech savvy employee in charge of the network.) This can create some very inappropriate situations. So, be sure that access to your network and servers are being appropriately managed in order to protect your company's sensitive data.
Working Backups
Even backup systems that work well initially are prone to failure. And far too many companies do not find out a backup is not working until it is too late. You want to regularly check your backups to ensure that the data you think is getting backed up really is.
So, please make sure your network is being actively managed by someone who can look after security, appropriate access and backups. This is definitely a case where "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
