With Windows 10 launching at the end of July, we often get asked if an upgrade is worth it. In general, upgrading to cutting edge technology is a poor investment for companies. New technology can be fun for personal gadgets, but getting the newest software and devices for our businesses can be expensive and unproductive.
Here are three reasons that new technology is not a good investment:
1) Risk of incompatibility
If you upgrade to Windows 10, it may not be fully compatible with some of your current systems (e.g. inventory, accounting) which means a lot of extra work and frustration for your team. It is better to wait and make sure all of your systems will work with new software before upgrading.
2) Bugs can cripple your operations
With the push to innovate, new software is often pushed out before it has been thoroughly tested on all computer configurations. And something as complicated as an operating system is difficult to fully test, even with extensive testing. If you upgrade, a bug could soft cripple your operations. It is better to not be a first generation user and wait until any major problems are discovered.
3) Benefits do not justify the investment
Just because a software company says you need the latest operating system does not mean that there is a business case for upgrading. It is expensive and time-consuming to upgrade any software or hardware. Wait until it makes sense to your business, not when something is released.
In most cases companies should wait to upgrade, unless there is a strong economic case for moving to to the latest version of software. You will get more value from your IT spend and significantly reduce your hassles.
