Unfortunately, most advice companies receive from their IT service provider is biased. Why? Many IT service providers resell products and services that are a source of revenue for them. So, they train their IT engineers to sell more products and services (and some even set quotas) rather than training them to provide unbiased recommendations.
In my opinion, this creates two significant problems:
1) Suboptimal Solutions
Rather than consider all of the possible options that could work for you, IT services companies that are resellers look primarily to the options they resell. So, it is like going into the Microsoft store looking for a computer or server. You can be sure they are only going to offer you Microsoft solutions, even if a Linux or Apple solution would be better for you. Sometimes, their offering might be the right fit for you. Other times, it will give you a suboptimal solution.
2) A Salesperson, Not an Advisor
IT infrastructure is ever more important to the functioning of a business. And, most business leaders do not have a good grasp on IT, nor do they want one. They want an advisor they can trust. However, when one of your IT engineer's incentives is to sell you more equipment and software, they become more of a salesperson than an advisor.
Therefore, whenever your IT engineer makes a hardware or software recommendation to you, be sure to find out whether they are a reseller or not. It just makes sense for you to understand whether they are making the recommendation as a trusted advisor or a salesperson.
At Skyriver IT, we do not resell any products or services, because we want to be trusted advisors to our clients -- without any conflicting incentives. In addition, we put our effort into training our technicians to provide better customer service, not sell more.
