Who is in charge of your network?

It seems an obvious question, at least to someone in the IT field. However, I regularly talk with companies that do not really have anyone in charge of their networks. Some networks are set up and then just left to run on their own.

While networks often work reliably for a year or more after an initial setup, it is pretty risky to leave it to chance if your network is at all important to your business. To actively manage your network, there are three primary things you want done:

Ongoing Security

If no one is providing ongoing security for your network, it is only a matter of time before it will be hacked. Security vulnerabilities are regularly found and hackers frequently exploit them. To protect your network, regularly update anti-virus software and other software to protect against known security issues. In addition, you want a firewall that protects your network while also permitting employees the access they need.

Appropriate Access

A tech savvy employee can often get access to sensitive information, such as other employee’s salaries or company financials, if appropriate access controls are not in place. Protect your company from problematic situations by managing access to your network and servers in a way that protects sensitive data.

Working Backups

Backup systems that initially work can fail. And far too many companies do not find out a backup is not working until it is too late. Regularly check backups to ensure that the data you think is getting backed up really is.

Make sure your network is being actively managed by someone who can look after security, appropriate access and backups. This is definitely a case where “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
