When is an Outsourced IT Team a Better Choice than In-House?

There seems to be confusion among business people about the benefits of using an outsourced IT team over having someone in-house. And while running an outsourced IT services company makes me a little biased, I think there are some clear instances when outsourced IT makes more sense than an in-house IT person:

1) Business is to too small for a full-time IT person

Nearly every business relies on some level of IT these days. And while many really small businesses do most of their own IT, that becomes impractical as you grow to 5-15 people. However, hiring a full-time IT person is too expensive and there is not enough to keep them busy all day. For this size business, outsourced IT is a logical solution. You only pay for “part-time” help while you can get IT help when you need it (24x7 with Skyriver IT).

2) Require IT expertise across multiple technologies

If your organization is large enough to employ a full-time IT person, finding one person with the broad range of required skills can be difficult. A typical business needs someone who understands networks and security, can support individual PCs and Macs, wireless technologies, mobile, and VOIP. While one individual can learn all these things, they are unlikely to develop expertise in more than one or two areas. And their lack of knowledge can create problems and lead to downtime. An outsourced IT service provider typically has an expert for each of your IT needs.

3) Avoid the challenge of hiring an IT professional

Many business people find hiring an IT person to be challenging. You are looking for a skill set that you cannot assess very well. And making a mistake can be costly and disruptive to your business. Using an outsourced IT service provider ensures that you are getting IT professionals who have the appropriate skill set for the job.

Of course, having in-house IT staff makes sense for some situations. For example, if IT is strategically important to your business, then you probably want to have in-house IT professionals. However, for most small to mid-size businesses, it is a good idea to at least look at outsourced IT services as an option to see if the skill sets and price are a good fit for your business.
