Trusted Advisor or Salesperson?

When you walk into a Verizon store and ask about whether you should choose Verizon or Sprint, do you expect to get unbiased information? No, you get a sales pitch because the person you are speaking with has a sales quota and gets paid a commission on sales.

Then should you trust an IT professional who also has a sales quota and makes a commission on what they sell? Many IT service providers resell products and services. And, their technicians have sales quotas or receive commissions on sales. So, this can create two different problems:

1) Suboptimal Solutions

2) Incentive to Sell

Because most business executives do not have a good grasp on IT, they want a trusted advisor to tell them when and how to best invest their money in IT. However, if your IT advisor is also a salesperson, they may try to sell you more than you need in order to increase their income or meet their quotas.

That is why you want to be sure you understand whether an IT service provider is a reseller when they are making recommendations to you. You should understand whether they are making the recommendation as a trusted advisor or a salesperson.

However, an even better option is to get unbiased advice. We believe IT professionals should be trusted advisors who help companies build and maintain the right IT infrastructure to achieve their business goals. And when their incentives are aligned with the client’s incentives, this is easier for them to do.
