The Most Overlooked Thing When Choosing a Location...

As life sciences companies grow, they need to move to new facilities. For new spaces, business managers look at cost per square foot, amenities, location, even the view. One of the things most often overlooked are the internet options. This can be a big mistake.

Some very nice buildings in San Diego lack decent internet options. Others have wiring that does not support high speeds. Your company can be stuck with a multi-year lease with limited internet speeds.

With more software and storage moving to the cloud, adequate bandwidth is ever more important for productivity. You don’t want expensive employees sitting around waiting to access their data.
So before signing a lease, take the following steps to ensure broadband speeds meet your needs:

  1. Check with the landlord to understand what cabling is installed in the building, ideally you want fiber, and what internet service providers (ISPs) serve the building.
  2. Contact at least two ISPs to confirm the broadband speed available to that location.
  3. Ask other tenants about their broadband speeds. Be sure to keep in mind what their needs are compared to yours.

When you learn about your broadband options before you sign a lease, it can save you a lot of hassle and frustration.
