Is Your Service Provider Really Qualified?

It's our natural tendency to trust people we know and particularly those who have given us good service. However, this can lead you to make bad choices in choosing service providers. You need to understand a company's area of expertise when choosing to do business with them for different services.

Just because your IT service provider takes good care of your network does not mean they are also good at providing cloud computing. When you are making a technology decision, you are choosing a service. So, be sure to ask yourself a few critical questions:

Who is really providing the service?

Many service providers (e.g. email providers, cloud computing) offer their services as white label solutions that IT service providers resell. The challenge here is that you have a third party between you and the company really providing the service. If you have a problem, it can take much longer to get it resolved than dealing with the actual provider directly. Whenever possible, you want to deal directly with the service provider and not a third party.

How solid is their infrastructure?

When choosing a service provider, you want to make sure they are going to be up and running when you need them. So, look for service providers that have their operations spread over at least two data centers. This prevents your service from going out when there is a power outage or natural disaster in one part of the country.

Is this an important part of their business?

If you are choosing a company for email marketing, you want to be sure this is an important part of their business. They need to understand deliverability, spam filters, tracking, and template design. You are going to be much better off choosing a company with 50 people focused on a single service than a company where one employee spends 33% of their time on that service.

So, do your due diligence before hiring service providers. Finding highly qualified service providers will save you a lot of frustration in the long run.
