When you are looking to move any part of your business to the cloud, it is very important to choose your vendors wisely. That is why I am concerned about the new cloud services I have been hearing about recently. A number of IT services providers now offer cloud services as an add-on to their standard IT services. The companies who use these services are typically not aware of the big risk they were taking.
Just because an IT company knows how to set up cloud infrastructure does not mean that they should be a cloud provider. It’s like thinking that because you are a good cook you should open a restaurant. Yes, you need to make tasty food for a restaurant to be successful, but there are a lot of other things that go into having a successful restaurant. The same is true for offering a cloud solution to clients.
Using a smaller, less experienced cloud vendor can be risky for three reasons:
- Go out of business - if they are not well established and financially stable, they could go out of business and take your data with them.
- Buckle under a cyber attack - this is not to say that larger companies will not have any problems here, it is just less likely, because they typically have security experts on staff.
- Infrastructure fails - less established companies may not have redundant and fault tolerant infrastructure in place. So, if part of their infrastructure fails, you could be left without data for hours or even days.
The important thing to remember is that your cloud solution is only as good as the vendor that is providing it. That is why you should choose your cloud solution provider very carefully, and not just use an IT services company that offers cloud services as an add-on.
