When we use technology, we want it to just work reliably 100% of the time. The problem is that technology does not always work. So, we should be ready for that reality.
A good example is sending and receiving email. Unless we have a problem with an email server, our email works really well 99.9% of the time. However, just like with US Postal Service, there can be occasional delays and even lost messages. So if you send a mission critical email, you should ask the recipient to confirm receipt of the email or follow up with a phone call.
Hardware and software companies are working on making things more intuitive and reliable for users. However, the technology supporting this simplicity is getting more complex. Consider cloud computing, which can simplify your life by making files available virtually anywhere. Using cloud computing requires all of the following to be working properly: cloud servers, the internet connection at the hosting facility, your internet connection, and your local computer or device. There are a lot more points of failure or potential bottlenecks than when you are on a local file on your local computer.
So while new technologies can really increase productivity and simplify our lives, we need to have realistic expectations for these technologies. Not everything is not going to work perfectly all of the time (what does?). With proper expectations for IT, we can be better prepared when something does not work quite as expected.
