As your company grows, you will need to move to new facilities at some point. (We just did less than a year ago.) When you are looking at new space, there is typically a focus on the cost per square foot, amenities, location, and even the view. What is often overlooked are broadband options. This can lead to a lot of frustration.
Just because a building is nice and has a lot of other amenities, do not assume it has good broadband options. Some very nice buildings in San Diego lack good broadband options, and others have wiring that does not support high speeds. You could be stuck in a multi-year lease with poor internet speeds.
Having adequate bandwidth is more important than ever for productivity. You are just wasting money if your employees spend a lot of time waiting to access their data.
So if you are planning a move, take the following steps for any spaces you are considering to ensure broadband speeds will meet your needs:
- Ask the landlord what cabling is installed in the building and which internet service providers (ISPs) serve the building.
- Contact at least two ISPs that serve the building to confirm the broadband speed that is available.
- Talk to other tenants about their broadband speeds. And when possible, find tenants who have similar bandwidth needs as you.
If you take the time to learn about your broadband options before you sign a lease, you can make a much more informed decision.
