This week marked an important milestone in the spread of COVID-19 in the U.S. as cases surged past 5 million in the U.S. Nearly 1 million cases were confirmed over the last 17 days alone and this has rightfully caused alarm for many federal and state leaders. The spread of COVID-19 has been propelled by the lack of strict enforcement earlier on in the year and this has caused further issues for Americans. The future for returning back to offices, schools, etc. still looks grim at best until proper and proven protocols can be established. Scientists have speculated the different types of transmission that has caused the rapid spread of the coronavirus. While it was believed earlier that the virus was transmitted through contact, there is increasing evidence of airborne transmission. Nearly 239 scientists and engineers have co-signed a letter titled “It is Time to Address Airborne Transmission of COVID-19”.

In the letter, the authors discussed how to re-engineer the ventilation of indoor spaces to reduce the spread of airborne transmission of COVID-19. The authors found out that even with social distancing, COVID-19 can still be transmitted through the air with propulsion from AC systems, fans, etc. Droplets from infected individuals can be spread through the air in confined spaces, so wearing masks is crucial to preventing the spread of the virus. With new information about the spread of COVID-19 emerging, local and federal leaders across the country are enforcing masks, lockdown procedures and other safety precautions. It is likely that these restrictions will continue for several months and future actions will be dictated by the success or failure of the current imposed procedures.
