Choosing a Service Provider for the Right Reason

When you find a company has provided good service to you, it’s natural to want to work with them again. However, that does not mean they are a good choice for any service they offer. For example, just because an IT service provider is good at security does not mean they are also good at providing a CRM solution.

If you are thinking of working with a current service provider for a new service, ask yourself a few critical questions:

Who is actually providing the service?
IT service companies sometimes offer white labeled version of services (e.g. cloud computing, email provider, security solutions). The problem with that is you have a third party between you and the actual company that provides the service you are using. Unless it is a company that only white labels their service, there can be conflicts of interest and challenges with support. That is why you want to deal directly with the service provider and not a third party, whenever possible.

How robust is their infrastructure?
If you are choosing a cloud-based service, you need the service be up and running when you need it. A robust infrastructure should include operations spread across at least two data centers and not just in the back room of an office. If they only have one location and it goes down, you are will be without that service until they are back online.

What is their primary business?
Sometimes, it is easy for IT services companies to get into new services by just buying off-the-shelf software. However, if you are choosing a provider for something like CRM, you want to be sure that CRM is their primary business or at least an important part. You are going to be much better off choosing a company with 50 people focused on a single service than a company where one employee spends 25% of their time on that particular service.

The important thing is to do your due diligence before choosing a new service provider. A good service provider will save you a lot of frustration in the long run.
