Avoiding Biased IT Recommendations

Do you trust the advice of a car salesperson? Then, should you trust the advice of a IT professional who has sales quotas? We think IT professionals should be trusted advisors as they are critical to helping companies build and maintain the right IT infrastructure. The problem is that many IT service providers resell products and services, and technicians have sales quotas or receive commissions on what they sell.

This can create biased recommendations and breach trust in two ways:

1) Limited Options

IT services providers that resell services or products look primarily to the options they resell to meet your needs. It’s like going into the Apple store looking for a computer. You can be sure they are only going to offer you Apple solutions, even if a Windows solution would better meet your needs. And, it could be the right fit for you. Or, it could be a suboptimal solution.

2) Not a Trusted Advisor

IT infrastructure is critical to most businesses. And because most business executives do not have a good grasp on IT, they want an advisor they can trust. However, if your IT “advisor” has an incentive to sell you more equipment and software, they become more of a salesperson than an advisor.

That is why you want to be sure you understand whether an IT service providers is a reseller when they are making recommendations to you. You should understand whether they are making the recommendation as a trusted advisor or a salesperson.

Getting Unbiased IT Recommendations

At Skyriver IT, we do not resell any products or services, because we want to be trusted advisors to our clients -- without any conflicting incentives. Our goal is to help businesses use IT more effectively and meet their business goals. If you would like to get unbiased IT recommendations, please contact us.
