Avoid the Bleeding Edge of Technology

Do you have the latest iPhone or or other new gadget? We are often drawn to the latest and greatest. While this can be fun for personal gadgets, buying the newest software and devices for our businesses can be expensive and unproductive. That is why it it is often called the bleeding edge (rather than the leading edge).

Why do you typically want to avoid the latest technology?

1) Benefits do not justify the investment

In many cases, the newest, fastest hardware is considerably more expensive than something slightly slower or smaller. For example, you frequently pay 50+% more to get a 10% increase in speed for a computer processor at the high end. For a business that is buying a large number of computers, it typically makes sense to buy something that is a step down from the fastest hardware. It provides plenty of power for users at a significantly lower cost.

2) Risk of incompatibility

If you upgrade to the latest accounting system, and it is no longer fully compatible with your inventory system (even if the accounting system claims to be compatible), your team in is in for a lot of extra work. It is better to make sure that all of your important systems will work together before upgrading. It can save a lot of frustration.

3) Bugs can cripple your operations

With the push to innovate, many new software solutions are pushed out before they have been thoroughly tested on all operating systems and computer configurations. If your whole company is using new software, a bug could soft cripple your operations. It is better to not be a first generation user and wait until any major problems are discovered.

Most companies should stick with ‘tried and true’ technology solutions, unless there is a strong economic case for moving to a more innovative solution. You will get more value from your IT spend and significantly reduce your frustration.
