In your organization, who is responsible for user education? In our experience, this is one of the most commonly overlooked responsibilities in IT management. Everyone thinks someone else is providing user education and no one owns the task.

When users are educated on the specific software packages they need to do their jobs and more generally about how your company’s IT infrastructure works, it increases productivity and empowers users. Security is also enhanced when users understand  IT security protocols and procedures that protect an organization.

How do you make sure users are educated about software and the IT infrastructure? Get clear on  the roles and responsibilities for user education. Some topics, such as software specific to the job, are best taught by a user’s manager. More general IT topics, such as protocols and procedures, can be covered by the IT team.

The important thing is for business executives to take the time to ensure that roles and responsibilities around user education are clearly defined for the IT team and business managers. The business benefits when users get proper training because it increases productivity and empowerment.
