As a business leader, you have likely heard about virtualization. But what is virtualization exactly? It can be difficult to understand exactly what it is and how it can help your business be more efficient. I completely understand your confusion. Coming from a finance and operations background in the IT world, it took a while for me to understand what it really is and the implications (especially when you have very technical folks explaining it to you). However, it is truly revolutionary and I hope I can explain it to you in a way that makes it clear to you.
What virtualization is (simplified):
Let’s use an analogy: Imagine you have 15 cars in charge of carrying a group of 15 people and each person is riding in a car by himself or herself. If they are all going to the same place, this is very inefficient. If you get a bus that can take all of these people together, it will be much more efficient (less energy and resources used). This is what virtualization does for your business. It allows you to use less computing resources when you can use one bus rather than 15 cars.
To take this one step further, you can even afford to have one bus carrying people and one following the first in case the first one breaks down or has any other problems. Having the two buses is still more efficient than 15 cars and it ensures that the passengers get where they are going on time, even if there is a problem with the first bus.
Now passengers are like your applications and the vehicles are your hardware. Using virtualization allows you to be more efficient even with backup hardware that can quickly “pick up” the applications if there is ever a problem with the original hardware.
I hope this helps you to better understand the benefits of Virtualization.
